| Information | October 2022 - Due to the damage from Hurricane Fiona, the Mi'kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail will remain closed until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. Wela'lin, Mi'kmawey Debert Cultural Centre ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mi’kmawey Debert is one of the most significant indigenous archeological sites in North America. The site dates back to approximately 11,000 years before present, a time when the last vestiges of glaciers were waning from highland areas of Nova Scotia. Debert Mi’kmawey represents the earliest human settlement in eastern North America. Mi'kmawey Debert National Historic Site is part of the Cliffs of Fundy Geopark. Length: 4.4 km loop Permitted use: hiking Trail surface: dirt path, wood chips, wooden steps, boardwalk surfaces Rating: "moderate" difficulty Hikers are to follow the obvious path and directional signs. For your safety, please stay on the trail. Caution! - Be advised that there is a chance of encountering unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) in this area. UXO is the term for military explosives that were used but failed to function properly or to detonate. If UXO is disturbed, it could function or explode and cause serious injury or death. If you see something that could be UXO, do not touch it! Leave the area and call 911. Directions: Travel Highway 104, take Exit 13 and continue north (turn right if travelling from Halifax/Truro; left if travelling from Amherst/NB) onto MacElmons Road, then veer left onto Plains Road. The trailhead is on the left, 2 km from Exit 13.   |
